To calculate the date on which each year the Carnival will be celebrated, the religious origin of the Carnival must be taken into account. Thus, although it continues to be celebrated before the Lent and the date on which the carnival is to be celebrated is officially marked by the Catholic Church, the carnival party has been separated, in our times, from any religious sense or character.

How is the carnival date calculated? The formula is as follows:

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and Carnival Saturday, which is when it is celebrated in most cities, is the Saturday before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the day of the beginning of Lent and is 40 days earlier than Palm Sunday, which is the Sunday before Easter Sunday.

If it seems a bit complicated, we offer you the date for the next few years. This way, the whole family can make plans to celebrate.

In2016, the carnival will be held on daysFebruary 6, 7, 8 and 9.

In 2017, the carnival will be held on days February 25, 26, 27 and 28.

The date of the carnival celebration varies from year to year. It is marked on the calendar by the Catholic Church and is calculated taking into account the date of Easter Sunday. Currently, the Carnival party is celebrated during the 3 or 4 days before Ash Wednesday, which begins Christian Lent.

The first Wednesday after Carnival, called "Ash Wednesday", and which begins Lent, is a period in which Catholics must abstain from all kinds of pleasures such as meat, eggs, sex and fun, usually. Consequently, the carnival is calculated in relation to Easter. Between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, 45 days must pass.

At first, the Church was against the celebration of Carnival, since it considered that the party was too permissive with the emotions, pleasures and desires of the people. For the Catholic Church, carnival represented disorder, the forbidden. But even so, the carnival continued to be celebrated, and the Church, feeling that it was impossible to prevent the Carnival, ended up officially adopting the festival, in the year 590 AD. C., officially going to schedule it on your calendar.

This festival precedes a supposed time of recollection and fasting. The Latin origin of the word carnival comes from Latin carnelevarium, which refers to the fact of removing meat, and is related to the prohibition of meat consumption during Christian Lent. Carnival was a way to prepare for the fast days that were coming.

Today, dating back some 5,000 years, carnival is celebrated in many parts of the world in similar ways, with carnival parades, float parades, comparsas made up of masked groups, costumed dancers, music and costume balls, and it usually lasts a whole long weekend, and includes the days after, usually the Monday and Tuesday after the weekend.
